Services and accommodations are based on eligibility.
For Note Taking
- Recording – Student records class lectures, and then replays the lecture to complete notes.
- Shared Notes – Student finds a classmate who is willing to share notes. Student fills in points missed in own notes.
- Note Taker – Arrangements are made to have another student take notes. Student receives carbon copy of notes.
For Reading
- ClaroRead – Computer software located in ARC. Text is displayed and read aloud by the computer. ClaroRead also includes a dictionary, thesaurus, and homonym check. Student can obtain a copy to download on home computer.
- Colored Overlays – For students with certain visual processing difficulties or scotopic sensitivity. Transparencies in various colors serve to reduce the contrast created by black print on white paper, thus assisting the student in tracking the words by "holding them in place."
- Learning Ally – Textbooks are read aloud by volunteers and an audio file is created. Student receives an audio version of the textbook so she can hear the text being read as she reads along.
- Enlarged Print – Sometimes makes reading easier for students who have difficulty with visual discrimination or perceptual organization problems.
For Writing
- ClaroRead – Student uses computer for compositions and writing assignments. ClaroRead software reads back what student has written. Also has a dictionary, thesaurus, spell checker, and alerts to commonly confused words.
- Word processor – Including spell checker and thesaurus.
- Inspiration – Computer software that assists a student in organizing thoughts to complete a writing assignment.
- Tutoring – By signing up for St Dv 143, students have access to ARC staff for assistance with writing assignments.
- Franklin Talking Dictionary – Handheld device for correct spellings, definitions, and synonyms. Information is displayed and read aloud.
For Math
- Tutoring in ARC – By signing up for St Dv 143, students have access to ARC staff for assistance with math. Tutors are trained to work with students with disabilities, and assistance is more personalized.
For Test Taking
- Test Proctoring –Students take tests/exams in a controlled, distraction - reduced environment. Tests are proctored in ARC.
- Extended Time – Either one and a half or two times the amount of time given to the rest of the class is allotted, depending on the student’s disability and the type of test given.
- Enlarged print or reduced number of items presented per page – for students with visual perception difficulties or limited vision.
- Spell checker – To increase legibility, unless spelling is graded on the test.
- Calculator or Multiplication Tables – For most math classes.
- Reader, recorded tests, or text to speech software– For students with reading disabilities, the appropriate method is selected.
- Scribe – For students with writing disabilities, a staff member writes test answers as dictated by the student.
- Breaks – For students with physical disabilities or difficulty focusing for prolonged periods of time. Tests may be split so students can take a break after completing each portion.
For Completing Graduation Requirements
- Academic counseling – Students are assigned an academic counselor from the CSD for assistance with planning classes.
- Reduced courseload
- Priority registration
For Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students
- Sign language interpreters
- Real time captioners
- Note takers
- VP device for video phone calls
For Blind/Low Vision Students
- Texts, exams, handouts, etc. in alternate formats
- Screen reading software
- Note taking assistance
