College Corps: Reducing Debt through Community Service | Inside California Education

Hear from Glendale Community College Fellows the
benefits of joining the College Corps Program.



The College Corps program led by California Volunteers and the California Office of the Governor has three core goals across the state:

  • To engage college students in meaningful service to build leadership and civic responsibility
  • To promote academic success and economic well-being with students from diverse backgrounds
  • To support the work of community-based organizations in key local priorities, with Glendale Community College focusing on addressing Food Insecurity and lack of Economic Opportunities in the community

Students who are accepted into the College Corps program at Glendale Community College will engage in community-serving opportunities that focus on Food Insecurity and lack of Economic Opportunities areas while receiving financial compensation and other benefits.

WHY COLLEGE CORPS? 

Each student serving as a College Corps Fellow for the academic year receives:

  • An opportunity to create an inclusive and sustainable world by supporting K-12 education and addressing food insecurity in the community
  • A $10,000 fellowship to help pay for college (up to $7,000 living allowance and $3,000 education award)
  • Real-world job experience and resume-building skills
  • Academic credit (to be determined)
  • Access to training, networking, and professional development opportunities
  • A sense of pride and accomplishment in working toward a common purpose alongside young leaders from across the state

ELIGIBILITY

Students interested in applying to the GCC's College Corps program should meet the following criteria.

  • Full-time, enrolled undergraduate student at a College Corps partner campus
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Ability to commit to the program for the full academic year
  • Must be a US Citizen, US National, legal permanent resident or AB 540 Eligible Dreamer

The College Corps program is designed for low-to-moderate income students. Therefore, each student selected to join the program should meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Qualifies for a federal Pell grant
  • Qualifies for a State Cal Grant or Middle Class Scholarship
  • Needs to work part time and/or borrow student loans to meet their educational costs
  • Is an AB-540 eligible Dreamer:
    • Must have a completed and submitted a California Dream Act Application (CADAA) for the academic year
    • Must be an active recipient of a Cal Grant B Award for the academic year
    • Must submit a CA DSIG Application to become eligible for Education Award

In addition, eligible fellows are required to:

  • Complete a National Service Criminal History Check and Live Scan, upon selection
    • Does not apply to AB-540 eligible Dreamer students
  • Commit to the program for the full 450 hours during the academic year
