Goals of the Architecture Department

The Architectural Technology department curriculum is formulated and designed to meet the specific needs of both certificate and transfer students. The certificate meets or exceeds current industrial requirements.

The goals of the certificate are to:

Provide new students with the information, skills, and training to enter the field of architecture.
Provide a course of study which will allow those already working in architecture to advance within their organization.
Provide an overview of architecture, design, inspection and construction techniques and their dependencies upon each other.
Provide architects a resource of trained and knowledgeable personnel for both entry level and advanced positions.

Instruction

Most classes are taught in the afternoon and evening to meet the requirements of working and full-time students. Not only does the department offer instruction in manual drawing, but also Building Information Modeling (BIM) software such as Revit Architecture and AutoCAD (see Skill-Based Training for other software).

Students have the option of using one of these methods of drawing in the advanced drafting/design classes. Students will find that most classes are taught in an informal, studio-type environment similar to the methods used at 5-year Architecture schools. All of the instructors within the department feel an obligation to help students achieve their goals as they relate to the study of Architecture. Many of the advanced design classes include instruction in model building which teaches the skills needed to create a study or finished scale model of their project.

Students also learn the use of Additive Manufacturing (formerly known as Rapid Prototyping) and Laser Cutting equipment. This equipment represents the cutting edge in architecture and is used in the creation of models of architectural structures. This equipment is used as part of the advanced architectural design classes to create models of student designs.

Transfer and Articulation

Transfer and Articulation with 5-Year B.Arch Programs

Glendale College has an excellent transfer rate to 4 and 5 year college and university programs.

Recently, our program created an 1-year Articulation Agreement with Cal Poly Pomona for their Architecture Program. We also have 2-year articulation agreements for the Architecture and Interior Architecture programs at Woodbury University and with the NewSchool of Architecture and Design in San Diego, Ca. These agreements allow students that complete some of all the courses for the GCC Architecture Certificate and a portfolio to be granted credit for the first one or two years of a five-year Bachelors of Architecture (B.Arch) degree.

On the average, 4 to 5 GCC Architecture students transfer each year to local Architecture Schools. Students have transferred to programs at NewSchool of Architecture, Cal Poly Pomona, USC, Woodbury, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, University of Arizona, Columbia, and other local colleges and universities. The training received at GCC prepares students for the Bachelor's of Architecture (B.Arch) degree as well as: Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, and Architectural Studies.

While some of the classes within the department do not directly transfer to some of these programs, the projects that are completed provide excellent material for the creation of a portfolio. Most programs require a portfolio for new and transferring students. These portfolios may be used as part of the application process and also to gain college credit within these programs.

Classes are taught by one full-time and three adjunct instructors six days a week. The department faculty are highly skilled in their respective fields of Architecture and have many years of experience.
