Students who have catalog rights prior to Fall 2025 may elect to complete the Cal-GETC requirements but it is not required.
What is Cal-GETC?
Completion of Cal-GETC will permit a student to transfer from a California Community College (CCC) to a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) campus or program without the need, after transfer, to take additional lower-division, general education courses to satisfy campus general education requirements.
Although it is strongly recommended that students complete Cal-GETC prior to transfer, completion of Cal-GETC may not be appropriate for some engineering, math, science, or other high unit majors. Some individual colleges or majors within a UC campus may not accept or recommend Cal-GETC to fulfill all of their general education requirements. See a counselor to discuss the best path for you.
2025-2026 Cal-GETC
Students who begin at GCC prior to Fall 2025 can follow the IGETC requirements, so long as they maintain continuous enrollment (have catalog rights). This pattern will not be updated beyond the 2024-2025 academic year.
For students following IGETC, courses taken in Fall 2025 or later can be applied toward IGETC certification, so long as:
- The student has maintained continuous enrollment and has catalog rights to follow the IGETC requirements
- The course is approved in the corresponding Cal-GETC area when it is completed
What is IGETC?
The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is recommended for community college students who plan to transfer to either the UC system or the CSU system and want to complete the lower division coursework for general education.
The IGETC may be a suitable option for students who are unsure if they want to transfer to a CSU or UC campus and wish to keep their options open.
IGETC shows course descriptions for each subject area.

Students who begin at GCC prior to Fall 2025, can follow the CSU GE Breadth requirements, so long as they maintain continuous enrollment (have catalog rights). This pattern will not be updated beyond the 2024-2025 academic year.
For students following CSU GE Breadth, courses taken Fall 2025 or later can be applied toward CSU GE Breadth certification, so long as:
- The student has maintained continuous enrollment and has catalog rights to follow the CSU GE Breadth requirements
- The course satisfied the CSU GE Breadth area in the 2024-2025 academic year
What is CSU GE Breadth?
The California State University General Education Breadth (CSU GE Breadth) is recommended for community college students who plan to transfer to the CSU system and want to complete lower division coursework for general education.
CSU Breadth shows catalog course descriptions for each subject area.
